The Obama Presidential Center officially opened to the public on Juneteenth, welcoming visitors to a nearly 20-acre campus designed to preserve history while serving the surrounding community.

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama greeted the first visitors on June 19 at the center on Chicago’s South Side. The public opening followed a dedication ceremony held the previous day.

The center honors the life, presidency and public service of the nation’s first Black president. Its museum includes campaign memorabilia, presidential artifacts, interactive exhibits and a life-sized replica of the Oval Office.

Beyond the museum

A campus designed for community

    A new Chicago Public Library branch includes a presidential reading room with thousands of books selected by the Obamas.

  2. Gathering

    John Lewis Plaza, picnic areas and landscaped grounds create public spaces for conversation and community events.

  3. Recreation

    The campus includes a playground, basketball courts and an athletic center.

  4. Access

    Only the main museum floors require admission; much of the campus is open to the public without a museum ticket.

Opening on Juneteenth

The opening date carries particular significance. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with an order declaring enslaved people there free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Opening a center devoted to America’s first Black president on that date connects a historic milestone with an ongoing call to citizenship, equality and public service.

A living civic space

The Obama Foundation has emphasized that the center is intended to be more than a monument. Exhibits present both accomplishments and unfinished work, while the public spaces are designed to encourage visitors to consider how they can contribute to their own communities.

The campus is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of museum visitors each year, with even more people using its free public amenities. For Chicago’s South Side, the opening represents a major cultural investment and a new gathering place rooted in the community where the Obamas built their family and public lives.
